OK, these aren't great photos and they aren't trees. But they are part of my resolution to post more photos to this site.
Giant sequoia, sequoiadendron giganteum. This seedling was remarkable for its bent habit, and I thought for sure it would turn out to be a new weeping cultivar...but now it seems to be straightening up. I'll post new photos periodically as she grows up.
Another view of the same seedling. Note that the seed leaves look normal, but all new growth is swept to one side.
A lovely, brand-new giant sequoia. Unfortunately I lost this one to sun while I was away on vacation.
This sorry character is a "giant" sequoia with a damaged leader. Hopefully it will shape up over the course of the next 500 years.
My new (larger) giant sequoia seems to have come through the winter all right. The soil had been pushed up around the trunk by the voles. Hopefully this won't cause any lasting damage.
The aspen on the right snapped this winter. We splinted it but it looks bad, though it does have buds that look OK. Time will tell.
Sugar pine seedling, pinus lambertiana. The only one so far out of about 30 seeds! Ain't she sweet?
This little guy--only 2cm high--somehow survived the winter and is growing again
I've come to love this plant! Got it at Strybing on sale, grows like a weed
Fuschia cuttings in their mini-greenhouse. What a pleasure to grow: these all rooted in two weeks and have been moved to a window planter.
This guy is a few weeks older. Notice the first true leaves starting to emerge at the center of the long seed leaves.
A red fir, Abies magnifica, is born on our porch. I am assured that the seed came from Carson Pass. I found these seeds at the Maple Leaf Nursery--a great source for good stuff from the Tahoe Basin.
Our porch with seedlings in their cages, the fuchsia above, and the bouganvillia. Imagine the difficulty of trying to do any serious propagation on this porch! Very pleasant for eating lunch, though--there is a pool just beyond the walkway and you can hear kids splashing while munching on a crusty baguette smeared with apricot stilton...but I digress. We've since moved to San Francisco, given up some sunshine in exchange for a basement and backyard. Perfect for filling with cuttings.
Note the two apple seedlings, towering above all else. Took these seeds from apples and let my son germinate them.
