Aphids!
It is getting hot in San Francisco (finally), so I asked my mother to
water my fuchsias. She came back with a bunch of complaints about my
plants! Informed me that they are infested with critters. I pretended
to know all about it already.
I found a bunch of tiny green bugs, looking about like lice, crawling on
the underside of the leaves. The tops of the leaves were covered in
that disgusting honeydew.
So, I spent a few minutes on the web finding out that the critters were
probably aphids, went to the store, and bought some malathion. I am
/scared/ of malathion, which I understand is really dangerous stuff.
For the sake of my fuchsias, though, I overcame my fears and sprayed
the plants. This should take care of those aphids.
I also have a few spittle bugs, I guess, from the occasional white blobs
of foam. I understand that these aren't harmful, but I bet that the
malathion will kill them, and I'll be sorry to see them go.

Greetings! I found your blog at Subterranean Homepage New's list of garden blogs, and thought I'd pop in. There is another way to control aphids which is natural, nontoxic, and even fun: ladybugs! You can purchase ladybugs are garden shops, and they'll mow through aphids like so much popcorn. :)
I also write a treeblog, and if you like, you can see my recent post on ladybugs here:

You can also buy ladybugs online here:

Good luck with your fuchsias!
Regards,
JLB

I'm so glad that I came across this site. The advice about the ladybugs is really great, I will have to try it.

I found a way to deal with aphids thats really easy,.. spread a LITTLE diazon around base of plant 'bout once a month, water & watch those little buggers split !

I've used the dishsoap to get rid of unwanted bugs, another tip is to spray early in the morning before the beneficial bugs are active. :-)
good luck!

So far this season my husband and I have experienced problems with clover mites and small flies. We found a selection of "greener" products which were helpful at Home Depot. Now we noticed that we, too, have aphids on our rosebushes. I have always been a fan of using ladybugs for pest control. Added bonus: my daughter loves them!

For aphids I use an earth friendly mild dish soap. If you have a Gleasons, Wholefoods or Trader Joe's near by they have a number of fine choices and the price run's about the same as the name brands. Tried ladybugs but they all moved on before the job was finished. I'm sure my neighbor got good use from them.

I have been having a problem with these little pests for a while. It seems, as soon as I get rid of them, they just come back.

I also use dish soap on aphids. So much more better for the environment!!!

You can also use ammonia diluted with water. I just soak a paper towel and then rub all the bugs off with the towel. It takes some effort and time but it is worth it. This is so much better than poison.

Lemon juice mixed with water in a spray bottle works well.

DIAZON IS BAD!!! ITS A NONO!!! A chemical NOT ok to use anymore!!!
please dont poison my soil and water with theses chemicals! lady bugs are great for aphid control and so are marigolds... plant em round your garden and in a ring round your tomatoes! works wonders and hurts nothing!!! not even the aphids, they just go away!
